چکیده

This paper presents several new open-loop guidance methods for spacecraft swarms composed of hundreds to thousands of agents with each spacecraft having modest capabilities. These methods have three main goals: preventing relative drift of the swarm, preventing collisions within the swarm, and minimizing the propellant used throughout the mission. The development of these methods progresses by eliminating drift using the Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire equations, removing drift due to nonlinearity, and minimizing the J2 drift. In order to verify these guidance methods, a new dynamic model for the relative motion of spacecraft is developed. These dynamics include the two main disturbances for spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), J2 and atmospheric drag. Using this dynamic model, numerical simulations are provided at each step to show the effectiveness of each method and to see where improvements can be made. The main result is a set of initial conditions for each spacecraft in the swarm which provides the trajectories for hundreds of collision-free orbits in the presence of J2. Finally, a multi-burn strategy is developed in order to provide hundreds of collision-free orbits under the influence of atmospheric drag. This last method works by enforcing the initial conditions multiple times throughout the mission thereby providing collision-free trajectories for the duration of the mission. ∗Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Aerospace Engineering, [email protected], AIAA Student Member †Assistant Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering, [email protected], AIAA Senior Member ‡Staff Engineer, Guidance and Control Analysis Group, [email protected], AIAA Member §Senior Member of the Technical Staff, Guidance and Control Analysis Group, [email protected], AIAA Senior Member ¶Senior Research Scientist, Guidance and Control Analysis Group, [email protected], AIAA Associate Fellow ‖JPL Fellow and Senior Research Scientist, Guidance and Control Analysis Group, [email protected], AIAA Fellow

High Accuracy Relative Motion of Spacecraft Using Linearized Time-Varying J2-Perturbed Terms

This paper presents a set of linearized equations was derived for the motion, relative to an elliptical reference orbit, of an object influenced by J2 perturbation terms. Approximate solution for simulations was used to compare these equations and the linearized keplerian equations to the exact equations. The inclusion of the linearized perturbations in the derived equations increased the high ...

Effects Analysis of Frozen Conditions for Spacecraft Relative Motion Dynamics

The purpose of this rersearch is to analyze the effective application of particular earth orbits in dynamical modeling of relative motion problem between two spacecraft. One challenge in implementing these motions is maintaining the relations as it experiences orbital perturbations (zonal harmonics J2 and J3), most notably due to the Earth’s oblateness. Certain aspects of the orbital geometry c...

Robust multi-objective control for the station keeping of the interferometric cartwheel

Groups of satellites flying in formation require maintaining the specific relative geometry of the formation with high precision. This requirement implies to consider the problem of relative station keeping in a renewed framework. In this framework, issues related to the derivation of reliable relative models as well as to the peculiarity of the synthesis problems must be jointly considered. Th...

A Passive High Altitude Deorbiting Strategy

A de-orbiting strategy for small satellites, in particular CubeSats, is proposed which exploits the effect of solar radiation pressure to increase the spacecraft orbit eccentricity so that the perigee falls below an altitude where atmospheric drag will cause the spacecraft orbit to naturally decay. This is achieved by fitting the spacecraft with an inflatable reflective balloon. Once this is fu...

Aiaa 98-4287 Investigations into the Unexpected Delta-v Increases during the Earth Gravity Assists of Galileo and Near

Unexpected energy increases during Earth flybys of both the Galileo and Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft have drawn evidence of spacecraft trajectory modeling errors, an unknown perturbing force or failure of Newtonian gravity. This paper will investigate the gravity field of Earth as a possible source of these anomalous AVs. Other possible sources of errors have been considered...
